What are cataracts?
A cataract occurs when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. It is normal for the lens to become progressively opaque as people age.
Patients begin to experience blurred vision, as though looking through fogged glass. They may be dazzled by lights at night or when driving through a dark tunnel, need more light to read, experience eye strain when reading, see double or notice changes in colour perception.
Surgery involves replacing the cloudy lens with a state-of-the-art intraocular lens, allowing the patient to recover visual acuity.
Can cataracts be treated? Treatments
There is currently no effective medication to stop the progression of cataracts. The only definitive treatment is surgery.
Phacoemulsification surgery
Through a micro-incision, the cloudy lens is emulsified and removed.
An intraocular lens — IOL — is implanted in its place.
Intraocular lens options
Multifocal or trifocal lenses: provide good distance and near vision, reducing dependence on glasses.
Monofocal lenses: correct distance vision and require glasses for near vision.
Toric lenses: correct astigmatism.
